The key to adulthood

When Nishara Jayaratne reached her twenty first birthday, her parents held a dinner party to celebrate the event at the Grand Ballroom of the Waters Edge Hotel. It was a gala evening in shades of colours, with entertainment provided by the Gypsies, and the new sensational dancing duo Dushyantha and Harshini performing a number which was followed by Dhushyantha in song.

There was not much colour in the room even though one expected to see all the hues of the rainbow. Even the decor was in a cream tone all of which was in subdued good taste. The birthday girl looked at her resplendent best in a dress in a shade of pale gold, the entire long slim skirted gown shimmering with sequins. For ornaments she wore drop earrings and a delicate necklace. Mother Chamari looked at her glamorous best in a two piece outfit in a vivid cerise shot silk, the sleeveless hip length princess line top worked with a guipure lace in the same colour spangled in beeds and stones at the hemline her skirt was on a flare. A striking pendent in rubies and diamonds made her ornament. There certainly was colour in the outfit Maeve Martenstynne wore. Her oriental styled pants was in a crushed chiffon in many colours, while the top was in a purple and draped over her arm was a stole in the same fabric and colours as the pants. She wore two long strands of cabochon blue sapphire beads for a necklace. Shades of pinks and cerise was popular with the women guests. In the palest of pink in youthful fashion was Rishini Weeraratne's dress. The empire waisted bare shouldered top of the dress was draped softly in the fabric and had a fine frill at the top, just below which was a row of large rhinestones to provide the glamour. A frill in a delicate pink lace adorned the hemline. Much deeper in colour was the pink Priyanthi Fernando wore. Her dress too which was bare shouldered and had a design in licks of black swirling upwards. Her magnificent diamond jewellery consisted of necklace, eardrops and a bracelet. The saree Gowrie de Silva wore too was in a vivid pink worked in a irregular leaf patterned border and scattered motifs and single sequins in silver. Her blouse was in bustier style. The kurta in a red worked in sequins, beads and stones was the choice of Yasodha Wimaladharma to join in the celebrations. Black and white featured in both Manik Kurukulasuriya's dress, and in the outfit Kushani Gankanda wore. Maniks black dress was slashed in white bands across the top and at the waistline. While the poncho style top Kushani wore was in stained glass like fragments in black, white and brown for a dramatic effect. Completely unusual was the draped top in olive green Ramani Fernando wore with raw silk trousers in the same colour. Only a necklace of corals brought a touch of elegant colour and a couturier touch.

The birthday cake in the form of a ornamental horse carriage was cut by Nishara with her mother, father and brother standing by for support.
