The Ballroom of the Galle Face Hotel was the ideal location for the first
ever Geoffrey Bawa Award 2007/2008 which was bestowed on the receipients
for Excellence in Architecture. There were nine finalists under
consideration for the winning slot, which finally went to Lalyn Collure
for his design for the Boulder Garden Nature Resort in Kalawana and to
Shyamika De Silva for the house she designed for Nalin Indrasena in Nawala.
Highly commended was the work of Nela De Zoysa for her showroom and
offices for Suzuki Maruti, and to Palinda Kannangara for his holiday
Bungalow at Ginigathhena.
It was a cultured and tasteful event to which many of the women present brought oodles of glamour and style, with the rare appearance of Ena de Silva grabbing all the attention as in the days of yore when she made fashion statements with everyone of her appearances be it at the Governor's Cup or at any cocktail or reception. Remarkable was her Kandyan saree which was a combination of prints and colours, she brought chic and charm to with the fall worn stole-wise, and her head crowned in a confection of feathers and fabric, which certainly made head turns.
Shyamika wore a saree in a print in the combination of flame and black which was the opposite to the silver grey and black striped saree Sunethra Bandaranaike wore. The black designer saree Nela wore was richly and heavily worked in gold and silver beads, pailettes and sequins. Her unusual jewellery was in a twisted cord of gold and silver. The colour contrasts on the saree Sunela de Zoysa wore was arresting. The black chiffon with black satin stripes on it was bordered, and had a pallu in brilliant saffron and gold. Lalini Alwis on a more subdued note wore a saree of shot silk in a tearose with borders and the 'ihe' in purple and gold. Dilini Raheem used a collar necklace in ethnic style beaten silver to bring a touch of class to her black salwar kameez inspired outfit.
There was a sparkle and sense of excitement in this room which was decorated in obelisks of white lotuses embedded in deep green leaves, which was influenced by the award, the design based on a obelisk placed on top of a gatepost at Bawa's Lunuganga Estate.
