TRCSL to Internet Service Providers
Filter websites featuring pornographic materials

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has directed Internet Service Providers to filter the websites featuring obscene, pornographic and sexually implicit materials.

This follows a special directive to the TRCSL by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to protect children against internet pornography.

The President has ordered that the filtering of these websites be done with immediate effect.

In recent years, there has been increasing concern about the exposure of children to the obscene and pornographic materials via the Internet. The proliferation of Internet raises serious problems concerning the unrestricted access to the obscene and phonographic materials, especially the use by children,. TRCSL said in a statement.

The President has recognized the seriousness of the threat posed to the children as a result of unrestricted access to the websites meant for the adults, it said.

If an adult wishes to have unrestricted access to the Internet, service maybe obtained from an Internet Service Provider in password protected manner making a payment. However, the user is responsible for use of the service in proper manner and should ensure, that the filtered websites are not accessible to the children, the statement said.
