Gunathilaka establishes new Sri Lanka javelin record

K. H. K. Gunathilaka, who threw a distance of 74.87 meters to win the Gold medal at the 70th Annual Singapore open Athletic Championship has established a new Sri Lanka record, the Athletic Association announced, on Monday.

Sri Lankan sailor Gunathilaka bettered the existing record by .6 meters when he performed his Gold medal winning feat at the Singapore Open. He lowered KGUP Jayawardana’s record, established in 2006.

Sri Lanka won four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze at the Singapore Open Championship which ended on Sunday.

Chaminda Wijekoon of Sri Lanka Army won two Golds for Sri Lanka in the 1500 meters (3.53 minutes) and 5000 meters (14.56.02) events while N. C. D. Priyadharshani won a Gold and a Silver in the women’s 100 meters (11.93 seconds) and women’s long jump (6.14 meters), respectively.

Chamara Nuwan Gamage’s jump of 15.42 meters in the Men’s Triple Jump and Chathuranga Ranthetige’s leap of 7.23 meters in the Men’s Long Jump earned Sri Lanka a Silver and a Bronze medal respectively. (RF)
