Six more LTTE militants arrested in Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI, August 7: Six LTTE militants and their Indian accomplice in Tamil Nadu were arrested on Thursday in connection with the seizure of 26 'acid cans' near Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on July 30, police said.

Inspector Thiagarajan of 'Q' branch, dealing with extremist activities in Rameswaram, said their contact Muniasamy, an Indian national, also had been taken into custody at Nagatchi in the southern Indian state’s Ramanathapuram district.

Police seized two outboard motors stolen by them at Athiaman here, the officer said. The 'acid cans' were seized at Durgah Valasai.

Those arrested today were identified as Kirubakaran, Jagan alias Deepan, Premkumar, Viji, Subasiddhan alias Siva, and Sasi alias Sasikumar.

The arrests come in the wake of the continuing crackdown on LTTE militants trying to re-establish supply links in Tamil Nadu.

Two Sri Lankan youths, part of a procurement module of the LTTE, were arrested on August 5 and materials used for making explosives were seized from them, a police press release in Chennai said Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, 'Q' branch police arrested Uma Ramanan (23) and Amalan (21), both hailing from Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka, and recovered 1.5 kg of potassium nitrate powder used in making explosives, a solar light and a few spark plugs and wires from their possession.

Their capture is the latest in a series of arrests of LTTE cadres, including its procurement wing chief Thambianna alias Daniel, and Sri Lankan nationals besides local associates in the past few weeks in the state.

A Sri Lankan Tamil refugee, Selvakumar, was arrested from suburban Keelkattalai area in Chennai on August 5 on charges of trying to supply electronic and communication gadget to the banned outfit.
