The
Ballroom of the Galle Face Hotel was the venue for a fashion show
specially showcased for the delegates and particularly their wives
organised by the ROI. In the Jubilee Room of the Hotel was a display of
the finest workmanship of the jewellers art, and an exhibition of some of
the most universally known gems from Sri Lanka. The guests were certainly
dazzled by the wonder and beauty of the works of art on display.
Not so, all of the fashions on the catwalk even though designers of the calibre of Yolande Aluvihare, and Babara Sansoni put their creations on the ramp modelled by our very own girls, now doing so well in the profession in many parts of the world. Also to open the show was a collection of diamond jewellery from "Cecille" the Sicille Kotalawela collection. To show jewellery of this calibre is an achievement on the catwalk, because to see the many faceted beauty of such work one needs a close look. Anyway the all black attire the models wore helped towards achieving this objective.
In the clothes collection was also a range of casual wear from Hirdramini’s garment industries which have markets in many cities of the world among them distinctive names in the fashion boutiques and departmental stores.
There were sarees and western styles and variations on themes much of them couturier and one of a kind. The most beautiful saree was in a white combined with a pale khaki with work at the shoulder and on other focal points embellished with pearls and beads from the Dharshi Keerthisena collection. There were diaphonous styles from Yolande some of which looked like butterfly wings, to fragile blossoms caught in a web of gossamer fabric. Babara went for a bolder look and she has been best known for her fabulous sense of colour and combinations of the same. There were some styles for men as well, creating a new look for the sarong by making the model wear a shorter version on top of the ankle length one.
It was indeed a pity that more people hadn’t the access to this show which was for the most part of international standards.
