Susi opts out from 100m; Thilini, Senanayake lose on day-one

Sri Lanka’s team captain Susanthika Jayasinghe has decided not to participate in Women’s 100m, one of her pet events, at the Beijing Olympics, it was reported last evening. Susanthika will therefore take part only in Women’s 200m to be held on Aug. 19.

Nhung Le of Vietnam beat Sri Lanka’s Thilini Jayasinghe 2-0 (21-13, 21-12) in the Round of 64 in Women’s Singles Badminton that began yesterday (Sat.) in Beijing Olympics.

The event was held at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium, the venue of the Olympics’ badminton and Rhythmic Gymnastics.

Le dominated the entire match having a nine-point lead in different stages in both games and wound up the proceedings in just 27 minutes.

Meanwhile Edirisinghe M. Senanayake was placed 48th in the final rankings with 561 points in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol Qualification Round held yesterday at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall in the Shijingshan District, Beijing. The No.1 rank, Wei Pang, emerged from the hosts’ contingent to win the Gold in that event and he got a total of 586 after a series of six shots.

"This was an unexpected thing. There was an unforeseen leak in the air cylinder of my pistol that caused the errors in my targets. I’ll try to forget this bad result in my pet event (Men’s 50m Air Pistol event) that will take place on Tuesday (12)," Senanayake told the Sri Lankan media after his disappointing performance.
