Brian Angunawela exits
Sri Lanka Export Development Board
Management Consultant & Financer Brian Angunawela ends his term as Chairman in the Sri Lanka Export Development Board. He was made Chairman by Rohita Bogollagama the then Minster of Export Development & contiuned under the Ministership of Prof. G.L.Peiris M.P. Minister Peiris had two goals for exports; one is earning foreign exchange & the other to to filter the benefits of export development to rural locations. The idea was to generate employment & to find a perment domestic avenue of income specially to village womanfolk.

Brian was entrusted to carry out these targets & to organise rural supply base more aggressively. The following rural work was prioritised by the EDB

Mushroom Developmet project: The project was to show better sales output with strict financial decipline.2008 income was around 9 million. Around 300 people have gained self employment.This is a project that was launced by the late Lalith Authulathmudali when he was the first Minister of Export Development

Regional Development

Regional programmes were made available through regional offices at Galle, Kurunegala & Kandy.

Cultivation of Kiriala for exports: Farmers were given asistance in Dickwella, Kolonna. Urubokka & Angunakolapellessa & Thambuttegama

Expanding Cultivation of Pineapple for exports: EDB with the Department of Agriculture has identified locations in Matara & Hambantota for pineapple cultivation for exports.

Kitul Development project: EDB with the Minstry of Industries have identified locations like Teldeniya for expansion of Kitul cultivation

Cashew Processing; EDB has assisted to restart Cashew processing units at EPVs.

Jewellary Development: EDB had a design development programme for jewellers.

Spice Sector: EDB organised export linkage programmes for producers.

e - trading for provicers was made available through regional offices.

Coir based product development; Assistance with Indian techonology was imparted through EDB to manufacturers.

Aqurarium fish development project in Polonnaruwa: NAQDA & NCC launched work for modern methords of farming.

Banana fibre project; The EDB asisted with the istallation of fibre machinery for fibre export at Embilipitiya.

Poly Gree Houses at Uva Paranagama: 40 locally made poly green houses were installed.

Any issues pertaining to export procedures at ports & cargo stations could be surfaced at ministerial level by application to the Exporters' Forum & the Sinhala name Samatha Piyasa was introduced during the Minstership of Rohita Bogallagama. With the Mahinda Chintana giving the rural masses a stable outlook in life was the theme even in Exports & not catering to the multinationals alone.
