Parents of the students who sat the GCE (A/L) examination this year have requested the Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe to take stern action against the teachers who have refused to evaluate the answer scripts of their children.

They have informed him that they will be compelled to take stringent action against such teachers if the authorities fail to make them fall in line, according to the Examination Department sources.

The Commissioner General has informed the parents concerned that he is unable to take such action against teachers independently. He has said he will have to consult the Minister of Education or the Ministry Secretary, according to sources.

However, the Commissioner General has consulted the Attorney General on this matter, based on information he has ascertained on about 8,000 teachers.

Mr. Edirisinghe told The Island on Tuesday that the teachers who had turned up for paper evaluation had come under threats from some members of the teacher unions.

He said due to teachers’ trade union action his department found it extremely difficult to conduct about one hundred different examinations scheduled for this year.
