Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratne has appointed a special team, headed by Kuliyapitiya SP Ranjith Padmasiri to inquire into the assault on UNP Anuradhapura District Organiser Dr. John Pulle and setting fire to his house and vehicles on August 20 by a mob.

The special police team arrived in Anuradhapura on Wednesday evening and commenced investigations.

Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Ruchira Weliwatte on August 25 informed the IGP that he was not satisfied with the investigations carried out by the Anuradhapura Police into the incident at the residence of Dr. John Pulle and ordered the investigations be transferred to a capable Police team.

The Chief Magistrate had also said that if the Police Department believes that the officers attached to the Anuradhapura Police had carried out their functions impartially, to initiate an immediate investigation to ascertain the pros and cons of this belief.

The special team has recorded statements from Dr. John Pulle, his wife and those who were engaged in election work at his residence at the time of the incident on August 20.
