The eruption of two artists
The
Lionel Wendt Gallery which has been the venue that launched many a artist
this time housed a collection of the work of two artists one a newcomer to
painting and the other a woman of more experience. There was a large
canvas of colour which captured many things from Still Life to Scenery and
Nudes and prancing horses.
Dianthi Wijeratne is the newcomer who ventured into the field but a few months ago. Having had basic guidance from Anoma Beatty Wijewardene she moved to Lateefa Ismail for further instruction and came up with a collection good enough to exhibit. Her work ranged from oils on canvas to water colours and sketches in ink and pencil and her subjects varied from scenery to still life and horses in motion. The two pictures of my choice was one titled "Hidden Stream" of a rivulet of foaming white water flowing through thick deep green foliage.
Nadine Mediwaka too painted a wide range of subjects which also ranged from scenery to still life with unusual subjects like "New Shoes". For the painting she had done of a group of women she brought a ethereal like quality to with floating shawls and colours that brought a distinct kashmiri touch, in shades of gold, white and a slash of red with the women on a rock of burnt sienna and a pastoral light green in the distance.
It is indeed a good idea to showcase the work of those not in the limelight to encourage and stimulate latent talent.
On the style arena there was not much that distracted from the paintings. Dianthi wore a shirt style top in a shade of aquamarine with black pants, while Nadine wore a saree of black with a design on it in cinnamon and orange tones which was patterned in batik fashion, with a black blouse and a chunky black necklace.
