G. K. G. Priyanka of Beddagama, a mother of two daughters, who was fortunate enough to save her life by herself from the tsunami devastation. Although she became a cripple she has now been able to recover as a result of medical treatment.
At present, Priyanka is faced with another tragedy. Her husband A. D. Ajantha, a 34-year-old a sailor in the Sri Lanka Navy has been missing without trace since February this year.
Priyanka said "we were married on March 11, 2000. We have two daughters and led a happy life. My husband was attached to the Diyatalawa Navy camp. On February 27, 2008 he got into a train at Diyatalawa to comehome. But, unfortunately since that day he has been missing without a trace," Priyanka said.
She said that for the last 6 months she has been making complaints to the Navy Commander and to the Inspector General of Police about her husband’s disappearance, but until now no action has been taken by the police and the Navy to trace her husband. "My friends, relatives and myself have been trying to trace the whereabouts of my husband," she said.
She had also made a complaint to the DIG Southern province regarding her husband’s disappearance. The plight of the two daughters is heart-rending, she said.
She said that she received several anonymous calls after her husband’s disappearance and all calls were rather threatening. Although she had informed the police about the threatening calls the pleas had fallen on deaf ears of the police. "We don’t know your husband and you can do what you want," was the answer given by the police. Had the police acted on the mobile phone numbers provided, they would have been able to find even a little clue about the her husband’s disappearance.
Priyanka added that the police were not treating people alike and the best treatment was provided to the affluent class. She had known from a reliable source that a retired police officer, who was assigned to investigate the case, was being harassed and his duties were obstructed by some unknown people. She had also informed President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the CID about her husband’s disappearance.
She said that Transport Minister Dallas Alahaperuma was a tower of strength because he had told her that the mysterious disappearance be investigated in accordance with the law and persons found guilty of this case must be brought to the book.
Priyanka said that she would appeal to Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa, IGP, Army Commander and Navy Commander to take action to find her husband as the family was unable to lead normal lives.
