Noise pollution case :Court orders arrest and remanding of monk

The Supreme Court yesterday warranted the OIC of the Welikada Police Station in Rajagiriya to arrest and remand the Ven. Pannala Pangnaloka Thera of the Welikadawatte Temple in Rajagiriya for not being present in Court, to answer notice.

The Environmental Foundation Limited had complained to Court that head priest of Welikadawatte Temple, Rajagiriya, had used unauthorized amplifiers and commuted the thumping of drums, emanating noise which was transmitted beyond his premises,

before 6 a.m.

The monk was ordered to be remanded till September 15, 2008 and produced before Court.

Meanwhile, three persons from Hikkaduwa were remanded till September 15, 2008, for emanating noise, in a nightclub. They had violated a Supreme Court order on the control of noise pollution. The Environmental Foundation Limited had complained against the monk.

Senior Superintendent of Police Gamini Dissanayake was Counsel for the Police .
