Prelate advices UNP to work with Govt.
KANDY - "Now that the United National Party lacks competency, it is advisable for it to come forward to support the present government and develop the country," the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero of Asgiriya said, when UNP National Organizer S. B. Dissanayake called on him on Sunday (31).
During the course of discussions, the Mahanayake Thero said the UNP is weak at present as those with the capability to work have left the party.
The Prelate said that the UNP should support the government and be a party to the development of the country and at an election it could contest separately.
However, S. B. Dissanayake refrained from a direct response to the prelate’s statement.
He stressed the need for a change in the election system of the country.
The proportional representation and the preferential system failed to elect suitable and competent representatives of the people to the House, he said.
The committee chaired by Minister Dinesh Gunawardene came out with a suitable election system, he added.
Dissanayake agreed with the prelate that every one should extend cooperation in the endeavour to wipe out terrorism in the country.
Member of the Kandy Municipal Council Raja Pushpakumara was present at the meeting.
