SLUMA wants Muslim politicos, families to declare assets

The Newly formed Sri Lanka United Muslim Alliance yesterday urged all Muslim politicians to disclose their assets and come forward to serve the community.

Alliance Propaganda Secretary Rizwan Rahim told The Island yesterday that Islamic Treasury, Baithual Mahal Fund, where money is collected in the form of Zakath – charity – gets only few million rupees a year, but according to estimates it should be nearly two billion rupees.

However, monies are not coming from the top especially from the Muslim politicians. He believes that if more monies come in to the fund, a number of social problems could be solved.

He said it was pathetic to say that there were number Muslims youth involved in organized crime in the sub-urban areas. They youths need to be encouraged to enter society with financial support.

He said that though they had themed their programme as `Can the past and present Muslim Politicians in Sri Lanka disclose their assests’, they had decided that all politicians from 1970 onwards should declare their assets along with that of their immediate family members.
