The recently concluded provincial council elections, in spite of the many acts of omission and commission in conducting the elections, threw up some interesting sidelights.
Two complete outsiders, one a ‘Gunshot’ and the other a ‘One Shot’ received several thousands of preferential votes - when compared with the number of preferential votes received by the former Chief Ministers – people of the place - Game Kollo.
The JVP has lost several of their members, whereas the UNP has increased their number of members representing the two provincial councils, compared with what the government party has received.
We do not understand the direct connection between the ‘war’ and the provincial council elections. We are much more concerned with the fast deteriorating law and order situation as well as the ever increasing cost of living, which needs top priority?
The early implementation of the 17th Amendment may well be yet another move in the correct direction.
