Bangladesh, India to combat insurgents

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) - Bangladesh and India have agreed to exchange information, and cooperate in the search and deportation of alleged insurgents and criminals who reportedly seek shelter in each other’s countries, top home ministry officials said Sunday.

At the end of two days of talks in the Bangladesh capital, Dhaka, Bangladesh Home Secretary M. Abdul Karim and his Indian counterpart, Madhukar Gupta, also condemned terrorism "in all its forms."

India has often blamed Bangladesh for sheltering militants and separatist rebels, while Dhaka has accused New Delhi of harboring its criminal fugitives. Both sides deny the charges.

Bangladesh and India share a porous 4,000-kilometer (2,500-mile) border.

They agreed to apprehend and punish those involved in cross-border smuggling of people, weapons, fake currencies and drugs .

"As regards criminals who have taken shelter in either country to evade the process of law, both sides agreed to continue efforts to find them out and send them back expeditiously," the two neighbors said in a joint statement.
