The Editor-in-Chief of the Lankadeepa has, through the Editors Guild of Sri Lanka, sent the following clarification on the incident opposite the Colombo Medical Faculty on August 28, this year. It reads:
"The incident that took place near Carey College on August 28 where Lankadeepa journalist and a Sirasa TV cameraman were attacked and their cameras snatched by a mob described as medical students of the Colombo University needs clarification since some electronic and print media had twisted it for obvious reasons.
It appears that these sections of the media had tried to accuse Lakadeepa journalists of forcibly entering the medical students’ hostel with scant respect for professional ethics.
Lankadeepa journalists were out on a feature about the refusal of teachers to mark A/L papers. This assignment had nothing to do with the medical hostel except that a medical student named Mr. Nadun Kiribathgoda had been interviewed, voluntarily, among others, near Carey College which adjoins the Medical College Hostel.
These journalists never entered the hostel premises although their cameras, forcibly taken by the mob, were found inside the premises.
