The Muslim community outside the EP was acutely aware of the dangers when Ashraff started the SLMC, and he himself showed awareness of them by starting the National Unity Alliance. But since then the Muslims have come to understand that there is no alternative to identity politics because that is the only kind of politics that there is in Sri Lanka, the Sinhalese having failed to establish even a single authentic national party.
