Tamil affairs commentator, D.B.S. Jeyaraj, who wrote two weekly columns to The Nation and Bottomline newspapers, has in a letter to the new owners of the Rivira Media Corporation, the publishing company, has expressed unhappiness about the change in policy under the new owners and said he would no longer contribute to those papers.
Jeyaraj’s letter to Messrs. Prasanna Wickramasuriya and Nilanka Rajapake was published yesterday in the Lanka Dissent website of Mr. Mangala Samaraweera.
This group, described as close to the government, bought Rivira from its founder, Richard Pieris and Co. PLC, some months ago first with Rajapakse taking a minority 49% and Wickramasuriya buying up the majority shortly thereafter.
The columnist who started his journalism career in the Virakesari later
worked for Upali Newspapers. A close associate of the late Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam, he was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
He emigrated to Canada after his U.S. stint but contributed to newspapers here including the Sunday Leader as well as to publications in India like Frontline on Sri Lanka affairs while living in Canada.
His wide knowledge of Tamil affairs and the LTTE which once beat him up severely in Canada and his range of contacts here made him one of the most knowledgeable and respected commentators on Tamil affairs here.
