Training in traditional handicrafts

The National Crafts Council (NCC) awarded certificates to several teachers who had successfully completed a specialized training in Handicrafts making. Several teachers in Kegalle district Kiriwandeniya and Warakapola underwent a training programme in traditional Beeralu lace making and handicarfts making by Palmyra leaves, the NCC said.

NCC Development Assistant Ms.Geethani Weeratunge told The Island Financial Review that the NCC had selected a number of teachers in several districts to be trained in modern handicrafts making. The teachers had been the descendents of hereditary handicrafts artistes who had brought credit to the country by manufacturing different kinds of handicrafts for export markets. In recognition of their services the NCC decided to provide specialized training to their sons and daughters who could preserve the ancient techniques in the handicrafts making with their pristine beauty.

She said that the principal aim of the training programme was to utilise the trained teachers’ services to train ameture handicrafts makers. The trained teachers who possessed different skills in different handicrafts making would be assigned to train beginners of the handicrafts industry and the NCC was in the process of selecting teachers across the country for training. The NCC had already held 36 training programmes for teachers and would expect to expand the training programme shortly.
