PIU probes delay in rebuilding school

The Presidential Investigations Unit is inquiring into the delay in completing the new buildings of the tsunami devastated Devapathiraja Vidyalaya in Ratgama, Galle, funded by Japanese tsunami aid of 25 million rupees, senior official sources said yesterday (8).

The PIU had received a number of complaints about the authorities being unable to complete the school buildings though the Japanese funding was made available a long time ago. The work had been delayed far too long, sources said.

The complaints received by the PIU had stated that some of the funds received had been misappropriated and some of the material used in the incomplete construction, like timber were of sub-standard quality, sources said.
