Brand Ambassadors: The bitter, hidden yet hilarious truth

Basically, these players of world recognition are resources to our country. Their fine talent, dedication and hard work are the key factors, which have brought them success.

But these players must realise that even if they are benefited from those companies (it could be justified since they are really talented players), who appoint them as Brand Ambassadors, the fact that the players represent them in the commercial world is something harmful to their good name and their image.

The publicity and fame of the sports personalities may grow in this deed but there is a possibility that their audience may recognise them as players who would do ‘anything’ for the sake of money and mere publicity. Some of these world’s greatest players may not be appearing in media advertisements with a sole purpose of commercial advantage.

The sole purpose of sports is to develop individual personality and to unite nations to build good relationships. These are the key factors in sports. ‘Champions are not made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them -their desire, their dreams and their vision,’ said Muhammad Ali.

Even these companies are not seemed to be thinking of the fact that by ‘using’ famous players for their commercial purposes, they would do a harm to those sportsmen and women because the spectators, the supporters are wise enough to understand ‘why’ such establishments tend to partner with such recognised players.

In addition, there are many other creative ways in which they can promote their commodities and get publicity from the people if they are really ready to do so. On the other hand, it seems to be that there are only limited number of sports and games that are selected to choose these ‘pop’ players. It is only in a very few sports that Sri Lanka has been able to produce sportsmen/women with international repute.

This factor is also not a very healthy one as we consider the development of other ‘lesser sports.’ These companies seem to be overvaluing these players whom they name as their Brand Ambassadors by offering large amounts of money to them to fulfill their commercial intentions. There is a possibility, on the other hand, that these players might fall in the trap of overestimating themselves in the long run.
