Unions to bring tardy Railway to a halt

Over 6,000 employees of the Railway Technologist’s Union were scheduled to launch one day token strike from mid night yesterday, union sources said.

The CGR Assistant Drivers’ Union, the Shunting Engine Drivers’ Union, Railway Assistant Technologist’s Union, Railway Technologist’s Union and the All Ceylon Railway Trade Union have confirmed their participation in the strike in protest against the non-implementation of the ten-month Distress Loan facility the department’s failure to rectify salary anomalies and amend the prevailing promotions scheme, Railway Technologist’s Union General Secretary M. A. Ranasiri told The Island.

He said the unions had held a number of discussions with the Transport

Minister Dallas Alahaperuma and CGR General Manager L. Gunaruwan on their grievances but no action but in vain.

He said inability of authorities to redress their grievances had prompted them to resort to trade union action. Four other CGR trade unions had joined the technologists’ union in the strike.
