Acting on Acting appointment

The Ports and Aviation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa has appointed Ranjith Silva, an Additional Secretary of his ministry as Acting Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) in the absence of Acting Chairman R. M. P. B. Wickrema.

Shortly after receiving the acting appointment for a six months period, Wickrema has left on an overseas visit. The Vice Chairman has succeeded Saliya Wickremasuriya.

Well informed sources said that the Acting appointment of Wickrema would be for a six month period unless terminated earlier. The sources said that this had been mentioned in the appointment letter issued to Wickrema.

His acting appointment came in the wake of the minister proposing retired Managing Director of SLPA Mahinda Kolonna, Sanjaya Senarath (brother of Gamini S. Senarath, Additional Secretary to the President and Chief of Staff) or a brother of Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Washington Jaliya Wickremasuriya as Saliya Wickremesuriya’s replacement.

Wickrema joined the SLPA in 2001 during Mahinda Rajapaksa’s short tenure as the Ports and Shipping Minister during PA-JVP pariwasa government and was made a Board member by Mangala Samaraweera who succeeded Rajapaksa. The sources said that he rapidly moved up the ladder before receiving appointment as the Acting Chairman.
