Sri Lanka dazzles at Singapore Jewellery Show
A record number of exhibitors and visitors at the Singapore International Jewellery Show – 2008 (SIJS) held from 21st – 24th August, at the ‘SUNTEC’ Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre, propelled the event to unprecedented success with both exhibitors and buyers reporting an increase in business transactions during the four day Show. SIJS 2008 provided a unique platform for leading national and international jewellery associates to showcase their most exquisite products. The 2008 edition was the largest in the Show’s 4 year history and set records in terms of visitors, exhibitors and exhibition space. The Show boasted over 170 Booths including leading jewelers in Singapore and Asian countries and 18 International Pavilions representing the broadest range of product categories.

Singapore’s jewellery sector is an important component of their retail industry. There are about 750 jewellery retailers in Singapore yet they contribute more than $1.4 billion in revenue. Jewellery is also one of the top three items purchased by tourists in Singapore.

The organizer’s of "SIJS" granted the status of "Country Partner" to Sri Lanka for the second consecutive year which gave worldwide publicity to the country as the Sapphire Capital of the world.

The "Sri Lanka Pavilion" at ‘SIJS’ which highlighted the theme "Sri Lanka – The Sapphire Capital of the World" was organized by National Gem & Jewellery Authority (NGJA) for the second consecutive year. The "National Pavilion" which displayed a glittering array of Gems and Jewellery from Sri Lanka presented by twelve members of the Trade, attracted buyers from Singapore and other leading consuming countries.

The members of the "National Pavilion" were successful in transacting business and establishing its position as the leading producer of fine quality Blue Sapphires to the global market.

Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Enterprise Development & Investment Promotion ceremonially opened the exhibition together with Hon. Lee Y Shyan – Minister of State for Trade & Industry. Dr. Amunugama in his speech mentioned that, Singapore and Sri Lanka enjoy a strong and friendly relationship based on cultural and traditional values for years which has evolved in to a significant Economic and Commercial partnership. He further stated that both countries are entering a new era of co-operation with trade relations being further enhanced to tap the immense potential that exists.

Singapore’s import of Jewellery from Sri Lanka has recorded Rs. 97.921 million in 2007 which is 4.7% from the total jewellery exports of 2007. Singapore’s imports from Sri Lanka in this Sector constitute of Gemstones and Gem and Diamond studded jewellery.
