Falling branch kills child
A falling branch of a tree being cut down caused the death of a seven-year-old school girl. This was revealed at the Inquest into the death of Hettiarachige Nuwanika, a resident of Bakamuna.

City Coroner Edward Ahangama reprimanded the lumberjack for his carelessness and ordered him to be present at the further inquest on September 28.

Giving evidence at the inquest, witness Jayakodige Jayaweera said that on the day of the incident a Margosa tree in Lal’s garden was being cut down using a machine, when both he and Vasantha spotted two girls running towards the tree.

Vasantha shouted at them to stop but one of the girls kept on running towards the tree. A branch fell on her head crushing it. Vasantha lifted the injured child and took her to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Witness said that at no stage of the cutting process were people warned to keep away from the area.

AJMO D. I. Ratnayake held the Post mortem. PS 1231 Ackman assisted by

PS 27689 Pathirana led evidence.
