Brazil ready to assist housing and sugar  industry in Sri Lanka
Brazil’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Pedro Borio met Minister of Housing Gitanjana Gunawardena on a courtesy call at the Ministry of Housing recently. It was a meeting of two Representatives of two Nations which were colonized during their early period by the Portuguese. Both countries share a common tropical climate and what’s amazing is that the present Presidents of both countries have a similar background coming up to the present exalted positions from grass-root levels of politics. President’s Lula de Silva and Mahinda Rajapaksa met each other at International fora and exchange greetings.

Minister Gitanjana Gunawardena mentioned that President Mahinda Rajapaksa would be very happy to meet and revive memories in addition to State Business.

Gunawardena, emphasized to the Ambassador the importance of housing and that Sri Lanka would invite Brazilian investors who have experience in housing in tropical climes.

Pedro Borio stated that Brazil is always ready to extend any form of assistance and cooperation and reminded the Minister of the helping hand extended during the Tsunami disaster. The Sister Township Concept was also discussed and the Historical City of Galle with its colonial heritage is similar to the township of Coperiv in Brazil and the establishment of these two Sister Townships will be developed in the near future.

Brazil remains as Chief Supplier of Sugar to Sri Lanka and the Housing Minister requested that Sri Lanka would need the help and assistance in the manufacture of sugar from Brazil.

The Ambassador mentioned that he would take all necessary steps regarding the request. After a short tete-a-tete they promised to meet again in the Parliamentary premises on the formation of the Sri Lanka - Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Association under the Chairmanship of the Speaker of Parliament.
