First coal power plant to be started in 2011
The Minister of Power and Energy says that the construction of the first phase of the country’s first coal power plant at Norochcholai in Puttalam district will be completedby 2011.

The Minister recently laid the foundation stone for the construction of a jetty at Kalpitiya in the Northwestern coast of Sri Lanka to download coal for the power plant. The construction of the jetty will cost Rs. 27 million.

US $ 455 million will be spent for the first phase of the Norochcholai coal power plant. It will add 300 megawatts to the national grid.

With the anticipated completion of all three stages of the coal power plant by 2015, 900 megawatts will be added to the national electricity grid.

The state relocated 80 families lived in the land selected for the construction site in Norochcholai. (Lankapage)
