Police ‘census’ in Western
Province to tackle LTTE build-up
Registration with police legal
requirement: SSP Gunasekera
The government has ordered a police census in the Western Province in a bid to neutralize an LTTE build-up targeting a range of political, economic and military targets. It will not apply to people from outside the Northern Province.
The official view is that the LTTE would attempt to cause chaos in Colombo and its suburbs to pressure the armed forces to call off the ongoing Vanni offensive.
Although Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has assured that the ongoing offensive was irrevocable, the LTTE, well informed sources said would attempt to sustain a large scale terror campaign in the South.
