A five-wicket haul by Ishara Amerasinghe gave Sri Lanka ‘A’ a narrow three runs win in the first unofficial ODI against South Africa ‘A’ under lights at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
South Africa needed seven runs from the final over when they chased 275 to win, but Amerasinghe got the ninth and the tenth wicket of the hosts with the 1st and the 4th ball in that over to give the Lankans a close win.
South Africa were given a solid start by Imraan Khan and Heino Kuhn. Khan joined Alviro Petersen, South Africa ‘A’ captain, to take the score up to 107 when Amerasinghe removed Khan for 61. With the required run rate increasing, Petersen started smashing the ball but once Dilruwan Perera dismissed him for 60, Sri Lanka were in with a solid chance.
Sri Lanka’s 274 came mainly due to half-centuries from Upul Tharanga (56), skipper Thilina Kandamby (67) and Angelo Mathews (70). Sri Lanka lost two early wickets after opting to bat first, but Tharanga and Kandamby added 67 and later Kandamby put on 64 with Mathews.
The second match will be today (21) in Pietermaritzburg.
