‘I’m no hawk’- President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, addressing the Sri Lankans at the New York Buddhist Vihara, said that some people and orgnizations called him a hawk. He did not wish for war but wanted to create an environment for all people of the country to live in a democratic society. "What we are doing is to create a democratic administration in the areas liberated from the terrorists," he said.

"The North of our country was not a region under the administration of the LTTE as the government had continued to provide public health, food and carry out civil administration including the payment of salaries to public servants and pensions; the only problem was the LTTE did not allow us to enter these areas," the President said.

He said he considered the children of the North and the other parts of the country as his own children. He was the President for the whole country and there should be a stable government that could create the environment for all the communities and groups to live in amity and that was the duty he had undertaken to fulfill, the President said.
