Late President upheld dignity of hill country - Kobbekaduwa

KANDY - Late President D. B. Wijetunga, the first executive President appointed from the Kandyan region, upheld the dignity of the hill country and the people who supported him, Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa said in a statement issued yesterday (22).

President Mahinda Rajapaksa honoured late President and visited him often during his stay in Kandy, Kobbekaduwa said .

Late President Wijetunga detested and denounced terrorism and looked forward to an undivided Sri Lanka, Kobbekaduwa said.

Wijetunge led a simple and admirable life and was committed to "gentleman politics." Kobbekaduwa said that his association with late President developed from the time of his (Governor’s) late father who was a close associate of the late President.

Meanwhile, the committee chaired by Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, is proceeding with arrangements for the state cremation of the late President at the Getambe MC playground on Thursday 25 afternoon.
