President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the Land Ministry to grant the legal rights of state lands on which Buddhist temples are situated to the Chief Priests of those temples.
Land Commissioner S. U. A. B. Boralessa says that the Chief Priests will receive a document with the President’s signature vesting them with ownership of the land.
The Land Ministry has calculated that there are around 1,500 state lands on which Buddhist temples have been established.
Recently, a Buddhist monk who was remanded and later discharged by the Supreme Court under sound pollution charges also made an appeal to the President to grant him ownership of the state land on which his temple is located. ColomboPage
