The Ceylon Electricity Board is yet to decide on a new tariff structure following the September 18 Supreme Court order to forward one within two weeks on the domestic consumption of electricity, CEB sources said.
The newly appointed CEB General Manager Badra Jayaweera told The Island that it was too early to comment on the decision, but senior CEB officials said that they were really bowled by the Supreme Court order. A possible solution would be to revert to the old system of paying the same rate up to a certain number units consumed and thereafter to decide on the rate for additional units, they said. Last Thursday, September 18, Chief Justice Justice Sarath N. Silva and Justices S. Sripavan and P. A. Ratnayake made the order when two fundamental rights applications filed by the Chief Incumbent of the Nugegoda Nalanda Ramaya, the Venerable Thiniyawala Palitha Thera and by the Consumers Association were taken up.
Numerous efforts to contact either the Power and Energy Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne or Minister of Power Mahindananda Aluthgamage for comments were of no avail.
