CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - A spokesman for South African’s deputy president says she will quit following the resignation of her boss, President Thabo Mbeki.
Spokesman Denzil Taylor says Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka wants to allow the country’s new interim president to choose his own deputy.
The announcement Tuesday came as parliament formally accepted Mbeki’s resignation. He will depart at a formal ceremony on Thursday.
Opposition parties in parliament accused the ruling African National Congress of damaging the country’s interests in settling an internal feud and ousting Mbeki.
