

The Government will allocate Rs.2400 million to supply electricity to develop new electricity projects to the Eastern Province. All villages in the Ampara, Trincomalee and Batticoloa districts all villages will be provided with electricity and the Government is positive that the Eastern Province economy devastated by the LTTE will have a new lease of life, the Power and Energy Ministry said.
Power and Energy Minister W.D.J.Seneviratne told The Island Financial Review that it took two decades to restore the entire transmission system in the Eastern Province as the entire electricity transmission system of the Eastern Province as it had been in shambles as a result of war.
He said that under the credit facilities granted by the Asian Development Bank, Government Consolidated Fund, Provincial Council Fund, Tsunami Rehabilitation Credit Facilities and Rehabilitation Fund. The Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomlee districts will recewe Rs.877 million,Rs.649 million and Rs.628 million respectively for electrification schemes.
Minister Seneviratne added that the three projects were nearing completion and at the end of this year all the projects would be completed. At present 85 per cent of the work had been completed. The Government was of the view that the rural industries in the Eastern Province which had come to complete standstill for last two decades would be rejuvenated with required infrastructure facilities, to strengthen the economy.
