


The police investigating a massive financial fraud
committed by a person who called himself Deshamanya Sakvithi Ranasinghe
Sir are in a dilemma over the action to be taken against Edwin Ariyadasa,
a prominent media personality who had functioned as the joint director of
S. R. Property Sharing Investment (Private) Limited, set up by the
suspected conman.
There has been no final computation yet on the total
extent of desposits taken by the company although over 4,000 depositors
had put their money into the venture and complaints continue to flow.

Amongst the hundreds of distraught victims of the
Sakvithi financial scandal, who continue to flock in hope outside the
abandoned offices of the company at Nawala Road, Nugegoda, were this
blind man and his wife who had invested Rs. 3.5 million. H. A.
Dayananda (37) and Manel Horadagoda (45) had sold a property in their
hometown of Gampola and deposited the cash at Sakvithi for a higher
return. With their dreams shattered, they took their place on the
pavement in the scorching sun, still struggling to come to terms with
the fate that had befallen them.

Surprise turn in flour mill
case with retrial ordered
The JVP’s case against the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA)
and the Dubai-based Serendib Flour Mills (Private) Limited over the
setting up of a flour mill in the Prince Vijaya Quay (PVQ) in the Colombo
port has taken a surprise turn with Appeal Court judges, S. Sriskandarajah
and Upali Abeyrathne who had heard the controversial case calling for a
re-trial.
