Priyani, an enterprising woman from Galle sees the lace making tradition
in the South and particularly in Galle as "a hand spun legacy."
This industry introduced in the beginning of the fifth century by the Portuguese had continued to survive till today despite the devastation of the tsunami in Dec. 2004.
Priyani, who owns her business, Thilini Lace at Magalle, last week opened an outlet at Pedris Road, Colombo 3, to offer a selection of fine lace including table and bed linen, cotton sarees, cotton shirts and blouses, pillow lace, shadow work, cushion cover, table mats and a whole other range.
She is the recipient of many awards including the Best Entrepreneur Presidential Award, Best Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and also won provincial and national awards as an entrepreneur who rose from the tsunami disaster.
Starting her business by collecting lace items from traditional lace makers by visiting them in their homes, she created opportunities to train over 300 new entrants to the industry via sponsored projects resurrecting the craft which had once dwindled to just a few experienced old hands after the tsunami of December 26, 2004.
