Lunch at Spoons

There was a gathering of women who are among the best dressed set when Swarna Ameratunge entertained her friends to a sit down lunch at the fine dining restaurant of the Colombo Hilton Hotel. The occasion was a post party in celebration of her birthday, on noons such as this the dress sense of a woman surfaces and brings out the individual flair for clothes and style in them. Ofcourse always clad with a sense of decorum and dignity, most times in a Kandyan saree is Swarna, who this afternoon wore a saree of fairly boldly printed chiffon in a shade of indigo patterned in a lotus like floral design in shades of pink mauve shades of purple and grey outlined in a pearly white. Her blouse was in the simple blue, and she wore a necklace of several strands of pearls linked with fine gold chain. A Kandyan saree in a slate blue had a unusual irregular border on the saree Princey Weerasooriya wore, the border in a print in subdued good taste. A handloom saree in shades of melon pink and orange with a trace of orchid in it was most appropriate for noontime wear Piyumi Dassanayake wore with an orange blouse and a strand of jet beads for a necklace. Presetiva Dharmadasa combined her sleeve less blue top with black pants while Anusha David wore a red suit style dress with red accessories.

The long kurta top in pale blue patterned in a kashmiri design in shades of mauve had a circular design in front on either side of the opening which was feminine and refreshing on Dulanjali Jayakody. Contrasts in salwar styles came from Mano Caderamanpulle and from Padma Maharaja. The latter wore a off white lined top appliqued in a cafe-au-lait, while the former wore contrasting royal blue and cerise. A wine red dupatta brought subdued colour to the grey kameez Srima Dissanayake wore. A white outfit on the lines of a trouser suit was Ishramali Herat Gunaratne’s choice. The neckline and a large motif below it was embroidered in metalic silver beads and pearls. A beautiful shade of pink made the striped saree with a narrow border in silver Nirmala Wijesinghe wore with a long necklace of pearls. There were many others who made statements in style and among them was Janaki de Soysa in a grey saree with a border of checks in green and white on a bottle green background. Janaki was the creator of the table decor which as usual enhanced the ambience of the room. Harshini Nadesan favoured an ivory and gold, saree and in this category of the well dressed were Badra Wijesena who as usual made her own mark, Bala Perera, Ilica Karunaratne and Romola Sivasunderam, Yoga Rodrigo in a black and green shaded saree and Malinee Bodinagoda in white, the saree bordered with a pallu in a handloom of black woven with white, red and yellow to make its own distinctive statement.
