Attack on doctor: Two soldiers released on bail

Two army personnel, the main suspects in a case of assault on a doctor attached to the Ragama hospital, were released on a surety of Rs. 25,000 each by Gampaha Magistrate Anura Kumara Herath last week.

The two suspects, Tushan Chaminda and A. K. Lasantha of the Ambepussa army camp, along with nine other army volunteers are accused of attacking the doctor whole he was traveling with his wife in the Colombo-bound express train from Badulla.

Police said an argument had developed after the doctor had, on security considerations, inquired about some traveling bags placed on the overhead luggage racks.

The army personnel, who were in civvies, had asked the doctor to mind his own business and threatened him. When the train reached Horape, they had allegedly attacked him, police said.

When the train stopped at Ragama, the doctor, G. S. Bandara, who suffered injuries on his head, back and spine was admitted to hospital. On a complaint made by him, the 11 suspects were arrested and produced in court.
