A political solution means rewriting the constitution, trading in the unitary state for substantial devolutionary autonomy, jettisoning the semi-theocratic Sinhala-Buddhist constitutional decorations, and most important, transforming the substantive functioning of the Sinhala State into pluralistic practices in respect of both Tamil and Muslim national minorities. None of this will happen under the present regime if and when the LTTE is ground into the dust - leaving aside the question of whether the LTTE will ever be so vanquished. Therefore the national question will remain unsolved, Tamil nationalism will retain its deep-seated hostility, and conflict, by whatever means, will be prolonged. Whether you talk through your heart or your head, this much is true; but if you talk through your hat, you can miss it.
