Laws needed to deal with private sector bribe takers – Bribery Commission

Director Investigations of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption SSP Nevil Guruge says that the Bribery Commission Act should be amended to enable the prosecution of bribe takers in the private sector as well.

At the moment the Act applies only to the public sector organizations.

SSP Guruge was addressing a workshop on elimination of corruption, waste and increasing productivity in Galle recently.

The workshop had been organized by the Peradeniya University.

Director Guruge said that a mother had lost a child recently because the bus in which she was traveling was not roadworthy. Somebody had taken a bribe and issued a license for that but much to the detriment of the interests of the public. There were so many other instances of bribery and corruption and the Commission must be able to deal with them whether the corrupt elements were in the public sector or the private sector.

The police were not the most corrupt institution in the country, SSP Guruge said. There were several other State organizations plagued by bribery and corruption, he said.
