The Hindu sets right tempo
vis-a-vis Tamil Nadu protests

The executive editor of the Hindu of India, a most prestigious newspaper in south India, with the largest circulation in that country and among the 24 million Indian diaspora, has correctly adjudged that India need not bend to the political gimmicks of Tamil Nadu politicians and intervene in the Sri Lanka-LTTE conflict. LTTE leaders Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman are on the wanted list of Indian courts and as such India cannot defend the LTTE.

It is a sad situation that the Sri Lankan the media, both electronic and print, are not forthright in matters of politics and history.

They do not highlight the UNP’s treachery by entering into a ‘Ceasefire Agreement’ in 2002. Nearly one third or more of the island was handed on a platter through a ‘deed of gift’ by our former lady President to Prabhkaran, like the one don by Don Juan Dharmapala of Kotte, transferring the Viharagams of Kotte to the Franciscan missionaries of the Roman Catholic Church for the advancement of their educational activities.

In the Kandyan kingdom, after the last Sinhala king Weera Parakarama Narendrasinghe, the Kandyan chieftains in order to gain political pelf and power, gave either their daughters or sisters to Nayakkars and installed the Nayakkar dynasty, in Sri Lanka.

In these two circumstances , there were no laws to prevent such transfers of power and land. But the Sixth Amendment to the Sri Lanka Constitution makes it mandatory for all public servants and all members of the central and local governments , including the President, to take an Oath of Allegiance, whereby one pledges to desist from assisting the separatists or separatist movements either physically, materially or even by word of mouth.

But the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, whilst under the oath of allegiance, unilaterally without the approval of his Cabinet, Parliament or even the Executive President, along with the Norwegian government, engineered and drafted a so-called Ceasefire Agreement, and handed over the North and East Provinces to the LTTE. His government continued to strengthen the LTTE by allowing the terrorist organization to recoup its forces through material means.

That smacks of unpatriotic fervour.
