MOHALI, India (AP) - India’s Sachin Tendulkar has become the leading all-time run scorer in test cricket, surpassing retired West Indies batsman Brian Lara’s record.
Tendulkar was 14 runs behind at the start of the second test against Australia and passed the mark with a three off rookie paceman Peter Siddle just after the tea interval on Friday.
Lara, who retired after the 2007 World Cup, scored his 11,953 runs from 131 tests with 34 centuries and 48 half centuries and had been test cricket’s leading scorer since 2005.
Tendulkar, playing in his 152nd test, made his India debut in 1989 against Pakistan at Karachi and since then has scored at an average of 54.02 with a record 39 test centuries and 49 half centuries.
He also holds the record for the most one-day international runs with 16,361.
Tendulkar was on target to overhaul the record in the first test at Bangalore but was dismissed for 49 at the start of a new session.
The 35-year-old veteran batted cautiously after going to the crease on the opening day of the second test in a period when India lost three quick wickets. He was unbeaten on 13 at the end of the middle session, meaning he had to wait 20 minutes before resuming his innings in his quest for at least two more runs.
He achieved it on the first ball after tea, gliding a full delivery to third man and pumping his fists as he took the runs.
The crowd at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali gave him a standing a standing ovation.
