Our products are completely melamine free says Edna

Edna Chocolates Ceylon Limited, manufacturers of Edna range, on Friday refuted all allegations that its products are contaminated with melamine and assured the public that all their products are safe for consumption.

The company called a news conference on the melamine issue and its General Manager (Sales) Thusitha Wijesinghe said that there had been an indication from the Health Ministry about possible melamine contamination.

The company immediately took swift action to implement precautionary measures and initiated investigations to establish the truth.

Product samples had been sent to SGS India and the results have clearly indicated that there was no melamine found in the milk powder used by the company, Edna executives said.

Edna had also requested their suppliers in China to submit samples for testing by an independent institution and these tests have also shown that there was no melamine in the milk powder used by them.

Edna Chairman S.T. Edirisinghe said that the company guaranteed a complete withdrawal from the market if any of their products proved to be contaminated.

The company also said that officials of the Consumer Affairs Authority had visited their premises and obtained samples for laboratory examination. They understood that these have been sent to Singapore for testing but no final report had been received to date.

"We assure the public that we are confident that no adverse report will be received," the company said in a statement.

It also said that since September this year no milk powder supplied from China had been used in their products and that Edna products are not in the list of 60 food products identified as positive for melamine by the Health Ministry.

"We are confident that our products do not contain any substance that would be injurious to the public," Edna said in its statement.
