Bangladesh 245 all out, NZ notch 57-4

CHITTAGONG, Bangla-desh (AP) - Bangladeshi spinner Shakib Al Hasan took three wickets for 11 runs to stun New Zealand’s top order and reduce the tourists to 57 for four Saturday after bundling Bangladesh out for 245 on the second day of the first cricket test.

Hasan broke through New Zealand’s opening partnership of 27, having Jamie How (16) was caught at silly-point by Rajin Saleh.

Rookie batsman Jesse Ryder (1) was then caught by Saleh off Hasan with New Zealand on 29. Hasan also trapped opener Aaron Redmond (19).

Redmond had built up the innings to 46 with Ross Taylor (12), who was trapped lbw by Abdur Razzak. Brendon McCullum (3) and Daniel Flynn (0) were at the crease at tea.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori had similar success in the morning session, taking 3-9 to finish with a five-wicket haul for the innings.

Defiant half centuries by Mehrab Hossain and Mushfiqur Rahim ended and the Bangladesh innings folded. with six wickets falling for 62 runs after the hosts had resumed on 183-4.

Vettori’s spin partner Jeetan Patel got 2-8 in the session and returned 2-76 overall and Bangladesh’s run-rate stood at a 2 runs per over.

Hossain and Rahim put on a record-making 139-run fifth-wicket stand in the last two sessions of the opening day to revive the innings after Bangladesh had slumped to 44-4.

But Hossain managed to add just four more runs before driving a slow Iain O’Brien (3-36) delivery in the air straight to Redmond at short cover, with Bangladesh on 188 for five. Hossain’s 83 came off 179 balls and included 11 boundaries.

Rahim and test newcomer Nayeem Islam added 41 runs for the next wicket, before Islam was stumped by Brendon McCullum off Patel. Bangladesh lost two more wickets on 229.

Vettori removed Rahim (79) and Mashrafee bin Murtaza (0) in the 116th over, then had Abdur Razzak (11) caught behind by McCullum.

Rahim faced 210 balls, with 12 boundaries and a six in an innings that stabilized the hosts.

Bangladesh has never won a test match against New Zealand. New Zealand won the preceding limited-overs series 2-1.
