New Delhi (PTI): Congratulating Sachin Tendulkar for becoming Test cricket’s highest run-getter, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Friday said here that it was a "proud moment" for the country.

"It is a proud moment for us. We are so proud. We congratulate him. He has created a record," said Chatterjee.

Describing Tendulkar as an icon for generations of sportspersons in the country, the Speaker said, "His (Tendulkar’s) record, I am sure, will never be obliterated. The whole country today is happy that he has achieved that record."

Tendulkar surpassed former West Indies captain Brian Lara’s record of 11,953 runs on the opening day of the second cricket Test against Australia at Mohali. Chatterjee said "Lara is one of the greatest players and our Sachin is also among all-time greats."
