Indian fishermen lost at sea, traced to Sri Lanka, rescued
CHENNAI: Six fishermen, who were reported missing off the Kasimedu coast last month, have been traced to Trincomalee in Sri Lanka.

The fishermen, who were stranded in the high seas after their power boat ran out of fuel, were noticed by fishermen from Sri Lanka who rescued them and took them to Trincomalee.

They were later brought to Colombo. The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka is planning to bring them back to Chennai, following the due procedures of the law.

The incident came to light when one of the fishermen called up his employer and boat owner, Balu, and told him that they had been stranded in the middle of the sea and were rescued and taken to Trincomalee. The families of the fishermen heaved a sigh of relief after coming to know that the former were safe.

Vinod (25), Gopal (50), Desingh (49), Pon Boss (60), Kumar (30) and Arumugam (28) ventured into the sea on a power boat owned by Balu of Kasimedu on September 18. They were scheduled to return after two days. As they did not turn up after four days, Balu lodged a complaint with the Kasimedu police.

"We immediately informed coast guard officials who launched a search operation within the International Maritime Boundary. But neither the fishermen nor their boat could be found. Meanwhile, on October 11, we were contacted by the families of the fishermen and Balu. They claimed that one of the fishermen spoke to Balu. We then verified with the Indian High Commission in Colombo through the fisheries department in Chennai and the district administration. They confirmed the news," assistant commissioner of police, P Madasamy said. (The Times Of India)
