Sinhala undergraduates of the South Eastern University in Oluvil, demonstrated opposite the University Grants Commission in Colombo yesterday, demanding that they be transferred to a southern university immediately.
They said that there was no security for them while undergoing studies at the Oluvil Campus as their lives were threatened.
A Sinhala undergraduate of the Eastern University in Batticaloa had been killed last August. Thereafter the Sinhala students demanded a transfer. The UGC accommodated them temporarily at the Kelaniya, Rajarata, Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo and Ruhuna Universities. They held a Satyagraha opposite the University and it passed its 13th day yesterday.
"There are 57 Sinhala students in the university. We are not allowed to leave the University due to security reasons. Though the university administration assures our security, we are afraid and the tension does not allow us to concentrate on studies. That is why we demand a transfer," Anushka Eranga, a spokesman for the Sinhala Students Unity said.
Chairman of the UGC, Prof. Gamini Samaranayake said that the undergraduates cannot be transferred at their wish. "While they have not obtained the required cut off marks in Z score marks, and as there are no vacancies prevailing at present in the Southern universities, we are unable to accommodate them," he said.
